MUBAS to construct 500-bed hostel to address accommodation shortage

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has unveiled plans to construct a 500-bed capacity hostel on campus, a development aimed at addressing the rising accommodation challenges faced by its growing student population. The announcement was made by MUBAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Nancy Chitera, during an orientation event for the university’s fourth cohort of students for the 2025 academic year.

Speaking at the event, Professor Chitera emphasized the university’s commitment to expansion and development, stating that the new hostel project is part of a broader strategy to enhance student welfare and improve learning conditions. “Our expansion efforts are designed to ensure that we cater to more students, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to significantly contribute to Malawi’s development,” she said.

The announcement comes as MUBAS welcomes 3,176 new generic students, enrolled in 101 programs across various disciplines. This large intake reflects the university’s increasing popularity and its role in providing higher education opportunities in business and applied sciences. However, the influx of students has also brought to light pressing challenges, particularly in the availability of adequate and affordable accommodation.

The new hostel is expected to alleviate these challenges by providing on-campus housing for a significant portion of students, reducing their reliance on private rentals, which are often costly and located far from the university. “We understand the struggles our students face when it comes to accommodation, and this project is a step towards addressing that issue,” Professor Chitera said.

During the orientation, Chitera highlighted the importance of preparing students for the demands of university life. The event was designed to provide guidance on academic expectations, campus policies, and the resources available to help students adapt and thrive in their new environment. She urged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the university and to strive for excellence in their academic pursuits.
