NONM, Nurse Mainje Strike Update

In a dramatic twist of events, the National Organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi-NONM has retracted its earlier statement to call for a nationwide strike beginning tomorrow following arrest of a male nurse in Ntcheu, Chidawawa Mainje for allegedly insulting President Lazarus Chakwera in a WhatsApp forum.

The organization’s President, Shouts Simenza said that after accessing the conversation in question, NONM being a professional body, find it unrealistic to stage a sit in hence distancing itself from the nurse’s conduct.

He further said Mainje’s statement was made in a political WhatsApp forum and out of his personal capacity not as a nurse.

Meanwhile, National Police Deputy Spokesperson, Harry Namwaza says police will not tolerate lawlessness when people are exercising their freedom of expression arguing every right has a responsibility.
