Police To Fight Gender Based Violence

The Malawi Police Service-MPS has emphasized on the need for collaborative efforts in dealing with Gender Based Violence in evacuation camps in the areas affected by cyclones.

Deputy Director of Community Policing Services and Rural Police Units, Francis Chisaka at Mulanje police made the sentiments when he visited flood survivors at Mitawa Primary School camp in Mulanje district.

Chisaka warned that Police will arrest anyone taking advantage of the situation to abuse people especially women and girls.

During the visit, Chisaka also handed over reflective jackets to community policing members and a suggestion box for the people to use in registering their concerns at the camp.

Receiving the items on behalf of the people, village Headman Namasalima thanked Police for the gesture saying it is timely.

Namasalima said that people at the camp and those in other camps are suffering saying any form of support is required.

He said the problems which came as a result of a cyclones have left people without food, clothes and other necessities adding that children are also unable to go to school.

One of the survivors, Annie Paul from Namasalima Village concurred with village head Namasalima saying life is tough at the camp and more support is needed.
