President Lazarus Chakwera has spoken in support of tribal appointments that promote cultural diversity.

He made the sentiments today during the Umthetho Cultural Festival of the Jere Ngoni at Hora in Mzimba district.

His stance follows growing public outcry on tribalism in regard to public appointments for positions of influence in the government system.

There are observations that people from the Chewa tribe are dominating top positions including the cabinet, since Chakwera assumed the presidency.

But others argue that the Lhomwe tribe has been dominating public appointments, therefore the inclusion of other tribes is now meant to balance the system.

Speaking at the cultural event, Chakwera strongly condemned tribalism but appealed for promotion of cultural diversity.
