PRIVATE SECTOR URGED TO UTILISE OPPORTUNITIES

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) resident representative Shigeki Komatsubara has underscored the need for the private sector to concentrate on the opportunities the country has instead of dwelling on the challenges.

Komatsubara made the remarks during a a roundtable discussion which was organized by UNDP and the Economic Association of Malawi (ECAMA).

He said much as the country is going through a lot of challenges, Malawi has great potential and the private sector can utilise the available opportunities. He added that the current challenges present opportunities for Malawi.

“We have the Continental Free Trade Agreement which the private sector can take advantage of by exporting products amidst the Russia-Ukraine war,” said Komatsubara.

He added the private sector has a crucial role to play in driving sustainable progress towards the achievement of Malawi’s aspirations.

He said through engagement, the government and the private sector can come up with innovative solutions to the challenges affecting the country.

“UNDP is at the forefront and working to promote the private sector engagement in the economy of Malawi through its Private Sector Development Programme,” He added.

Also speaking during the discussion, ECAMA Secretary General, Andrew Kumbatira, urged the government to formulate policies that can make businesses thrive.

On his part, the Director of Private Sector In the Ministry of Trade, Diamond Chikhasu, admitted that government is aware of the challenges facing the private sector.

” As a government, we are committed to addressing the main constraints to trade which hinder development goals,” said Chikhasu, there is a need to fast-track the recovery plan.

“We will create a conducive environment for businesses in the country by formulating deliberate policies, ” he said.

The roundtable discussions have brought together various players in the private sector.

The ECAMA has partnered with UNDP to organize a roundtable dialogue to consolidate the challenges which are being faced by the private sector.
