By Noel Mkwaila-BLANTYRE A Malawian citizen and rights activist, Fryson Chodzi has written Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority-MACRA to suspend two radio stations, MBC Radio 1 and Zodiak from broadcasting live the proceedings of a homosexuality court case. Chodzi argues broadcasting such case is leading to violation of children's rights, cultural values and religious beliefs. "As a representative of majority, I feel compelled to voice out my concerns on behalf of those who find such discussions inappropriate and against our norms," reads a letter to MACRA's Director General, Daud Suleman. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says the FM Spectrum Re-framing Project will provide a long lasting solution to the challenges that the broadcasting industry has been experiencing. MACRA Director General, Daud Suleman made the remarks at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Monday during a press briefing on the progress the project has made since December, 2022. Daudi Suleman, the Director General of MACRA, said the new FM band plan aims to make better use of the available spectrum and increase the number of participants in the industry. Mzuzu, November 8, Mana: Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) says it will spend about K20 billion on procurement and installation of physical infrastructure for National Addressing System (NAS) across the country. MACRA Director General, Daud Suleman disclosed this in Mzuzu on Monday when he opened a training workshop on NAS for local authorities from the Northern Region. He said besides being computer based, there is need for physical infrastructure for NAS to be operational. The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) has ordered Angaliba television and radio to cease broadcasting for failure to pay outstanding licence fees. In a statement signed by Macra director general Daud Suleman, the authority directed Angaliba to cease broadcasting within 24 hours from June 14, 2022. Reads the statement in part: "In 2021, Macra renewed Angaliba's Television and Radio licences. The renewal was subject to Angaliba paying outstanding licence fees, Angaliba made some payments towards the outstanding fees but disputed the amount owing to Macra." It further says while reconciliations were underway to ascertain the exact amount due to Macra, Angaliba resumed its transmission contrary to Macra's directive. Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority says it will net mobile money fraudsters with the set up of the Central Equipment Identification Register. The Director General for MACRA, Daud Suleman, has announced this in Blantyre during a media briefing to mark consumer rights day which is being commemorated today, 15th of March. The theme for this year's Consumer Rights Day is: 'Fair Digital Finance.' Suleman explains under the initiative it will be mandatory to register all mobile phone devices along with the simcards. He says that a taskforce has been established encompassing mobile money operators, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prison Service and National Registration Bureau.
