Zambian National Fined K3.5 Million for Attempting to Smuggle Petrol into Zambia

Mchinji, Malawi – The First Grade Magistrate Court in Mchinji has ordered Zambian national John Soko to pay K3.5 million for attempting to smuggle petrol into Zambia.

According to state prosecutor Helix Kamkweche, Soko was caught with 27 drums of petrol, totaling approximately 1,000 liters, hidden in his vehicle. Kamkweche urged the court to impose a strict penalty, highlighting that such acts contribute to the ongoing fuel shortage in Malawi.

Magistrate Fred Juma Chilowetsa agreed with the prosecution, emphasizing that the punishment should serve as a lesson to others attempting similar offenses.

John Soko hails from Naniya Village in Chief Mpezeni’s area, Chipata, Zambia. Authorities continue to warn residents and cross-border traders against illegal fuel smuggling, which disrupts the country’s fuel supply and economy.
