Stakeholders in the fight against corruption have hailed the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi for embarking on a meter account verification and revenue protection exercise following a reported syndicate of reselling allocated electricity units to employees.
Recently the Media reported that the corporation has lost billion through the syndicate.
In a statement signed by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi management, all customers who suspect or know that their meter functionality was tampered with have to declare such issues effective April 2022.
Mathews Kajani, Team Leader of Mzuzu Youth Anti-Corruption Movement said although the corporation has made a right move towards fighting against corruption and illegal connectivity, the objectivity of the exercise remains questionable as it will be handled by the same ESCOM employees.
Kajani suggested that there would an inclusion stakeholders including the civil society to ensure that the outcome of the exercise bear fruits.
