Alliance for Democracy (Aford) will on Monday continue its nationwide celebrations marking 31 years of existence as a political party with a rally scheduled for Nyambadwe Ground in Blantyre.
Aford spokesperson Saulos Thindwa has told Nation Online the rally will also be part of the party’s re-launch initiative.
The party started its 31st anniversary celebrations and rebuilding exercise on April 30 2023 at Chilimampunga Ground in Lilongwe.
“As such we are calling on all Malawians residing in Blantyre and surrounding areas to come and celebrate with us during this historic event at Nyambadwe Ground.
“As a party, we are also celebrating the country’s 31 years of democracy which was championed by Chakufwa Thom Chihana, the founder of Aford,” said Thindwa.
He said while Malawians are celebrating 31 years of democracy in the country and the dawn of multi-party system of government, it was also important to honor Chihana who proclaimed democracy in April 1992 when he landed at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe and got arrested by the Kamuzu Banda’s regime.
“We need to appreciate his efforts after putting his life at risk for the sake of the Malawians. We must remember that the freedom we are enjoying today came at a cost of this courageous man.
“As such, Aford thought it wise to recognise him as we celebrate our 30th anniversary as a political party in Malawi. He fought for Malawians, that is why today we are celebrating 31 years of democracy and 30 years of our existence as a political party,” said Thindwa.
The key speaker during the rally is expected to be the party’s president Enock Chihana.
There will also be music performances by Joseph Phungu Nkasa, Don Tars, Giboh Pearson, Annie Matumbi and other musicians.
