Renowned musician Mlaka Maliro has officially joined the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), according to a Facebook post by Buthelezi Ellerton Gamah. The musician is expected to be formally welcomed into the ruling party at its headquarters in Lilongwe this afternoon.

Gamah’s post, while confirming Maliro’s political shift, also took a critical tone, commenting on the current political landscape. “MCP is busy buying musicians while people in places like Machinga are left to struggle, surviving on basic meals like chitedze,” Gamah wrote, expressing concern about the party’s focus.

Mlaka Maliro’s move to the MCP has stirred discussion across social media platforms, with many interpreting it as part of the ruling party’s strategy to engage popular figures ahead of the 2025 elections. While some view it as a positive development for the artist’s career, others have voiced concerns, questioning the party’s priorities amidst ongoing economic challenges facing many Malawians.

As political tensions rise in the build-up to the elections, Mlaka Maliro’s decision to join the MCP is likely to be seen as a significant move, with his influence potentially swaying supporters. However, it also raises questions about the balance between politics and the struggles of ordinary citizens.
