Malawi’s opposition parties have joined forces to protest the handling of the electoral process by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and National Registration Bureau (NRB).
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF), UTM, and Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) have notified the Lilongwe District Commissioner of their intention to hold demonstrations and vigils.
In a bold statement signed by all four Opposition Secretary Generals, parties fear that irregularities could compromise the integrity of the 2025 General Elections.
They said MEC’s chair, CEO, procurement, and ICT directors are urged to step down.
Reads part of the statement: “Opposition parties seek greater transparency and fairness in electoral preparations.”
Initially, the UDF pulled out of a joint press conference but has since expressed solidarity with the opposition’s demands.
This united front demonstrates the parties’ commitment to ensuring a free and fair electoral process.
The protests and vigils will take place in Lilongwe, with opposition parties urging authorities to address their concerns before voter registration begins.
The parties have set a deadline of November 14, 2024, for authorities to suspend the registration process due to irregularities.
As Malawi prepares for the 2025 General Elections, the opposition parties’ demands highlight the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral process. The international community will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.
