Concerned Malawians Accuse NRB of Issuing 1 Million IDs to Minors to Benefit Malawi Congress Party

By Burnett Munthali

Reports have emerged alleging that the National Registration Bureau (NRB) in Malawi issued over one million national IDs to minors with the aim of bolstering support for Malawi Congress Party in the upcoming elections. These claims have sparked widespread debate and criticism, with opposition voices calling for immediate action to address the situation.

The situation escalated further when minors reportedly began registering for the voters’ roll in the Central Region. Annabel Mtalimanja, an official at the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), has been accused of facilitating the process by allowing underage individuals to register. This has led to a growing chorus of discontent among concerned citizens, with some accusing MEC of failing to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

“Annabel Must Resign,” Says Suleiman Chitera
Suleiman Chitera, one of the concerned Malawians, has called for drastic measures to address the alleged irregularities. “The voter registration process should be halted immediately, and all registrations declared null and void,” Chitera stated. He further accused MEC of failing to uphold its mandate and demanded the resignation of Annabel Mtalimanja, saying, “Annabel must fall.”

Chitera also announced plans to hold a press briefing to amplify these concerns and push for accountability. “We are ready to raise our issues publicly and ensure that Malawians are not subjected to a rigged electoral process,” he declared.

Implications for the 2025 Elections
These allegations come as Malawi gears up for the 2025 general elections, a highly anticipated political event. Accusations of electoral malpractice could undermine public confidence in the democratic process and spark further political tensions.

MEC has yet to officially respond to the allegations, while NRB has not issued a statement to address the claims of issuing IDs to minors. The controversy underscores the need for transparency and accountability in the electoral process, as stakeholders urge authorities to investigate and resolve the matter to ensure credible elections.

As the nation watches closely, the unfolding developments will likely have significant implications for Malawi’s political landscape and the legitimacy of the 2025 elections.
