Members of the Medical Aid Society of Malawi (Masm) Gym in Blantyre brought the spirit of Christmas to children admitted to the Pediatric Surgery and Neurosurgery Ward at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital today.
Accompanied by Santa Claus, the team distributed items worth over K1.3 million to the children and their guardians, bringing smiles and joy to those facing extended hospital stays during the festive season.
Speaking during the visit, Masm Gym fitness coach Chipi Gomba explained the motivation behind the initiative. “We realized that we have been blessed. This whole year, we have been able to go to the gym and enjoy good health, so we thought it wise to pass on that love to others. The team made contributions, and with support from well-wishers, we raised over K1.3 million,” he said.
The donated items, which included essential supplies and treats for the children, were received with gratitude. Pediatric Surgery and Neurosurgery Ward nurse in-charge Betina Sakala highlighted the challenges faced by patients in the ward. “Our patients stay long in the hospital, and as such, they require support and encouragement from various people. This gesture means a lot to us,” she said.
Jennifer Msiska, the ward’s guardian chairperson, expressed her appreciation for the support. “We are truly grateful for this donation. It’s encouraging to see such kindness, and I urge other well-wishers to emulate this good example,” she said.
In addition to distributing gifts, the Masm Gym team sang Christmas carols with the children and their guardians, spreading holiday cheer. They also shared fitness tips with the guardians and nurses, teaching them squats to help them stay active and healthy as they care for the patients.
The initiative was a touching demonstration of community love and solidarity, reminding everyone of the true meaning of Christmas—spreading joy and compassion to those in need.
