Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) leader and former President, Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, has announced his readiness to assume leadership of Malawi once again. Speaking at Mbayani Market in Blantyre during an impromptu rally on Wednesday, Mutharika called for immediate preparations for a transition of power, urging the current administration to start packing their belongings.
Mutharika expressed his strong dissatisfaction with the current government, accusing it of causing numerous problems, including widespread hunger, soaring prices of essential goods, and oppressive governance.
“The Nation Deserves Better”
In his address, Mutharika highlighted the struggles Malawians are facing under the current leadership.
“Our mission is clear: we aim to remove this government that has brought nothing but suffering to our people. Hunger is everywhere, prices are rising uncontrollably, and there is no respect for human rights,” he said to a cheering crowd.
The former president urged Malawians to unite under the DPP banner, promising a return to stability and economic progress. He described his leadership as a period of hope and growth and assured the people that his administration would focus on alleviating their hardships.
“It is time to restore dignity and progress in our nation. The current leadership has failed, and we must act to bring change,” he added.
The rally at Mbayani Market drew a large crowd, with many expressing their agreement with Mutharika’s sentiments. Residents cited frustrations with high living costs and a lack of tangible solutions from the current administration.
“Prices keep going up, and life has become unbearable. We believe Mutharika can bring back the economic stability we once had,” said a local vendor.
Mutharika outlined his vision for Malawi, focusing on economic recovery, food security, and the restoration of law and order. He emphasized that his leadership would prioritize creating jobs, reducing the cost of living, and upholding democratic values.
“Our people deserve a government that listens, a government that cares about their daily struggles. I am ready to lead again and deliver on these promises,” he stated.
As the country approaches the 2025 general elections, Mutharika’s declaration sets the stage for what could be a highly competitive political season. With his call for unity and change, the DPP leader is positioning himself as a strong contender to reclaim the presidency.
The rally concluded with chants of support from the crowd, signaling that Mutharika’s message resonated with many who are desperate for change.
