Four arrested for selling cannabis at Lizulu Market in Lilongwe

Police in Lilongwe have arrested four individuals suspected of selling cannabis at Lizulu Market without proper authorization. The arrests followed a tip-off from concerned members of the public who reported suspicious activities at the busy market.

Hastings Chigalu, the spokesperson for the Lilongwe Police, confirmed the arrests and provided further details on the operation. He stated that the suspects were apprehended after being monitored for selling cannabis in various forms under the guise of operating through a legitimate business entity.

“The suspects were using the name of a recognized company to conduct their illegal activities, deceiving the public into believing they were authorized to trade in cannabis,” Chigalu revealed.

During the arrest, police confiscated a variety of cannabis products, including powdered cannabis, dried leaves, and pre-rolled joints. The suspects were identified as Joshua Majomeka, George Kachala, Levison Spear, and Shadrick Mbewe.

Chigalu emphasized that while the cultivation and sale of cannabis are regulated in Malawi, operating without proper licensing is a criminal offense. “The sale of cannabis must comply with regulations set by the government. Unauthorized trading not only undermines the law but also poses risks to public health and safety,” he said.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to illegal possession and sale of cannabis.

The arrests highlight the importance of community involvement in tackling illegal activities. Chigalu commended the residents who reported the matter and encouraged others to follow suit. “We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies. Working together, we can create a safer and more lawful environment for everyone,” he added.

This incident is part of broader efforts by the Lilongwe Police to crack down on illegal drug activities in the city. Authorities have intensified surveillance and enforcement measures at markets and other hotspots where such activities are suspected to occur.

As the government continues to regulate the cannabis industry, law enforcement agencies are working to ensure compliance with the law. The arrests at Lizulu Market serve as a warning to others engaging in similar illegal activities that they will face legal consequences.

The police have reiterated their commitment to upholding the law and protecting the community from the dangers of unregulated drug trade.
