Likoma Island, Malawi – UTM presidential running mate Mathews Mtumbuka has pledged a massive K1 trillion annual investment in Malawi’s tourism and agriculture sectors, with special focus on Likoma Island, as the party intensifies its campaign ahead of the September 16 elections.
Mtumbuka braved a four-hour delay due to fuel shortages to reach Likoma, making him the first presidential running mate to hold rallies on the island this election season. Party officials described him as a workaholic who has been actively campaigning since day one.
Addressing supporters at whistle-stop rallies, Mtumbuka said Likoma has long been neglected in terms of development despite its huge potential. He assured residents that a UTM government under presidential candidate Dr. Dalitso Kabambe would transform the island into one of Southern Africa’s top tourism hubs, capable of attracting foreign currency and creating jobs.
Mtumbuka revealed that the UTM manifesto allocates K500 billion annually for tourism development. He said Likoma, with its natural beauty and cultural heritage, would be at the centre of this plan, positioning Malawi as a regional travel destination.
On agriculture, Mtumbuka pledged another K500 billion every year, with part of the funding dedicated to aquaculture. He said Likoma residents would benefit from loan facilities for cage fish farming, boosting food security, income, and exports.
Mtumbuka urged the people of Likoma to rally behind UTM president Dr. Dalitso Kabambe, stressing that the party has a clear plan to uplift Malawians’ lives through economic growth, youth empowerment, and sustainable development.
