Flood-affected households under Sub-Traditional Authority Kapichi in Monkey Bay have commended the Malawi Red Cross Society for providing timely humanitarian assistance that is helping families recover from devastating floods.

The beneficiaries say the organisation’s cash transfers and livelihood support have enabled them to rebuild their lives after losing homes, crops, and other valuable property during the disaster.

One of the beneficiaries, 22-year-old Agness Vincent, who cares for four children, said the floods destroyed her house and left her family with nothing. She said the K120,000 cash assistance she received from the Malawi Red Cross Society helped her construct a temporary grass-thatched shelter and purchase maize for food.Malawi Red Cross Society ICBH Project phases out in Dowa

“I lost everything during the floods. The support came at the right time and has helped my family start rebuilding our lives,” she said.

Francis Kamwendo, Secretary of the Chikwalala Farmers Group, also praised the organisation for donating a solar-powered irrigation pump and 1,200 hybrid banana seedlings.

Kamwendo said the project will improve food production, strengthen climate resilience, and create sustainable income for farmers affected by the floods.

“Once we begin harvesting the bananas, our lives will never be the same again. This support has given us a chance to recover economically,” he said.Traore draws A red line: Burkina Faso rejects foreign military bases in defiant sovereignty stand

The beneficiaries made the remarks on Friday during a visit by Danish Red Cross President Jette Joan Runchel, who toured the flood-affected communities to appreciate the impact of assistance being delivered through the Malawi Red Cross Society.

Runchel expressed satisfaction with how the support is being utilised, saying she was encouraged to see beneficiaries embracing innovative farming methods and working towards economic independence.

She said the visit reaffirmed the Danish Red Cross’ commitment to supporting humanitarian and disaster recovery programmes that improve the lives of vulnerable communities in Malawi.
