The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services is appealing to all foreign nationals residing in Malawi to respect the rule of law or risk deportation
Public Relations officer for the Immigration Department, Pasqually Zulu, said the appeal follows the deportation of a Nigerian national who was involved in drug dealings.
He said the 34-year-old Nigerian identified as Chimaraoke Justice Okorie, was using passport number AO9149817.
Zulu said Okorie was arrested by Police detectives on 27 August 2022 after being found with 17 blisters of cocaine in Lilongwe.
“Upon being taken to court, he was fined K1.5 million and the recommendation was also made to have him deported to his native country.
“He was then handed over to us to carry out the deportation order through Kamuzu International Airport in line with section 4 subsection 1 (f) of the Immigration Act of 1964, Chapter 15:03 of the laws of Malawi,” Zulu said.
He further said the development is a strong signal to all foreign nationals residing in Malawi to respect the rule of law despite having all valid immigration status, and failing to comply upon being convicted by the courts, section 4 subsection 1 (F) applies to deportation.
