President Lazarus Chakwera today appeared in Parliament to address critical national issues and respond to questions from Members of Parliament (MPs). The President’s presence in the legislative chamber underscores his commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara commended President Chakwera for making himself available to engage with MPs. She highlighted the importance of the session, emphasizing that it provides a platform to tackle pressing issues affecting Malawians.

In her remarks, Hara urged MPs to adhere strictly to the session’s order paper, reminding them that the allocated time of 1.5 hours must be used effectively. “I call upon all members to focus on the outlined issues and avoid veering off-topic to ensure we maximize this rare opportunity,” she said.

President Chakwera was warmly received upon arrival, shaking hands with MPs from both the government and opposition benches. This gesture of camaraderie set a tone of mutual respect for the session. Notably, he also exchanged pleasantries with the Leader of the Opposition, who posed the first question regarding the state of the country’s economic landscape.

The question, which highlighted concerns about inflation, unemployment, and rising costs of living, provided President Chakwera with an opportunity to outline his administration’s efforts to address these challenges.

During the session, the President is expected to face additional questions on governance, infrastructure development, and social welfare programs. This engagement marks a significant moment for parliamentary democracy in Malawi, as it allows legislators to directly seek clarification from the Head of State on issues of national concern.

Malawians are keenly following the proceedings, hoping for candid discussions and practical solutions to the challenges the country is facing. The outcomes of this session are likely to shape public perceptions of the government’s commitment to addressing the pressing needs of its citizens.
