The Mzuzu stadium’s brick wall, which has exceeded its lifespan, continues to pose a threat to human lives, particularly during football matches.
On Thursday, a section of the perimeter wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall, raising concerns over the stadium’s infrastructure.
Mighty Mukuru Wanderers supporters chairperson in the northern region, Yosefe Misinde appealed to the City Council to consider start construction of a new stadium.
“Fortunately, no one has died or injured in the incident. However, the collapse has highlighted the urgent need for a new facility, urgent repairs and renovations,” said Misinde.
Mzuzu City Council’s spokesperson, Macdonald Gondwe, told the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) that the collapse affected a 20-30 meter stretch of the wall.
“The council had anticipated the wall’s deterioration and has allocated funds for repairs, which are expected to be completed within two weeks, ahead of the Mayor’s Trophy tournament,” Gondwe explained.
The stadium is also undergoing renovations to host the 2025 TNM Super League games and meet international standards. With the new season set to kick off in just a month, the timely renovation of the stadium is crucial to ensuring the safety of spectators and players.
