The Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB), through the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), has announced the first-ever National Children’s Congress, a historic event that will bring together 1,800 children from across Malawi. Scheduled to take place from July 30 to August 5, 2025, the congress will be hosted at Don Bosco Parish in Lilongwe.
The event aims to deepen the spirituality and morality of children within the Catholic Church, nurturing them into responsible and faith-driven individuals who can positively contribute to society.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, Right Reverend Vincent Mwakhwawa, the Bishop Chairman for the PMS, emphasized that the congress is a crucial step in strengthening the faith of young Catholics. He noted that moral and spiritual guidance is essential in shaping children into responsible future leaders.
“This congress will provide a platform for children to grow in their faith, learn moral values, and develop a strong sense of community. Our goal is to raise a generation of children who can be agents of change, grounded in Christian principles and ready to impact society positively,” said Bishop Mwakhwawa.
The congress will feature various activities, including:
Catechesis and faith-building sessions led by clergy members.
Workshops on morality and ethics aimed at reinforcing good behavior.
Interactive discussions on social responsibility and leadership.
Cultural and recreational activities to promote unity among children from different backgrounds.
With such a large gathering of children, safety and security have been a top priority in the event’s planning. Tina Kandodo, the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, assured parents, church members, and the public that tight security measures have been put in place to ensure the children’s well-being.
“We understand the responsibility that comes with gathering so many children in one place. That is why we have put strict security and health protocols in place. Trained caregivers, medical personnel, and child protection officers will be available throughout the congress,” she said.
In addition to security personnel, volunteers and clergy members will also be actively involved in monitoring and assisting the children throughout the week-long event.
The National Children’s Congress is the first of its kind in Malawi, demonstrating the Catholic Church’s commitment to shaping the moral and spiritual lives of young believers. The initiative aligns with the Church’s broader mission of promoting faith, discipline, and service to society from an early age.
As preparations continue, excitement is building among Catholic communities, parents, and educators who see this as a transformative event that could shape the future of Catholic children in Malawi.
With 1800 children expected to attend, this congress is set to be a milestone event in the country’s religious landscape, reinforcing faith, morality, and a sense of purpose among the next generation of Catholics.
