NDP’s Mwenifumbo Declares Only Two Major Political Parties in Malawi

Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo, leader of the National Development Party (NDP), has declared that Malawi is currently dominated by only two major political parties: the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Speaking to the media, Mwenifumbo said the country’s political landscape has increasingly become polarized, with DPP and MCP emerging as the only strong forces capable of influencing national governance.

“In our analysis, only the DPP and MCP have the national reach and structures to be considered true contenders for power. As the NDP, we are observing and assessing the policies and ideologies of these two parties to identify which one closely aligns with our own vision for Malawi,” said Mwenifumbo.

He emphasized that his party is focused on issue-based politics and will not support any party blindly. “Once we determine which of the two parties supports policies that resonate with our goals for development, we will throw our support behind that party,” he said.

Despite this strategic positioning, Mwenifumbo has also confirmed that he has submitted a letter of intent to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), signaling his interest to contest in the upcoming presidential elections.

His dual approach—of assessing alliances while preparing to run—suggests a calculated political strategy aimed at increasing NDP’s relevance in the 2025 elections.
