The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has launched a strategic training workshop for 90 aspiring Members of Parliament and local councillors from Malawi’s Central Region, marking a key step in its preparations for the September 16 General Elections.
The workshop, convened just a day after the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officially opened the campaign period, is designed to arm DPP candidates with critical skills for running effective, coordinated campaigns within their constituencies and wards.
DPP Director of Campaign, Chifundo Makande, together with the party’s Director of Elections, Jean Mathanga, and Director of Political Affairs, Ben Phiri, are leading the training sessions. They are focusing on campaign strategy, voter engagement, and effective communication.
Speaking during the opening of the workshop, DPP Vice President for the Centre, Alfred Gangata, underscored the need for discipline, issue-based messaging, and unity among the candidates.
“We want to see a disciplined team that speaks with one voice and focuses on issues that matter to Malawians,” Gangata said. “This is the beginning of our journey to reclaim the trust of the people in this election.”
The DPP is positioning itself for a strong comeback, and party leaders say the training is part of broader efforts to enhance grassroots mobilization and ensure candidates are campaign-ready as the race to September 16 intensifies.
