Atupele Muluzi, President of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has officially submitted his nomination papers to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
The event took place at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Saturday, 26th July 2025.
Muluzi arrived in grand style, accompanied by senior party officials, supporters, and well-wishers dressed in UDF regalia, chanting songs of unity and renewal.
His submission marks the formal entry of UDF into the presidential race ahead of the September 2025 Tripartite Elections.
The MEC team received and inspected his nomination papers, following established procedures for all aspiring candidates.
By fulfilling this requirement, Muluzi has demonstrated compliance with electoral regulations and a readiness to contest for the country’s highest office.
This move is seen as a strategic comeback for UDF, which has been seeking to reassert itself as a major political force in Malawi.
Many political commentators view Muluzi’s candidacy as a blend of youthful energy, democratic legacy, and technocratic potential.
His campaign has so far emphasized economic recovery, youth empowerment, good governance, and national unity.
Muluzi is also leveraging the legacy of his father, former President Bakili Muluzi, who led Malawi through its democratic transition in the 1990s.
Supporters at BICC expressed confidence in Muluzi’s leadership and expressed hope for a renewed Malawi under his stewardship.
Meanwhile, the MEC continues to receive nomination papers from various presidential hopefuls as the election calendar progresses.
As the clock ticks towards September 16, 2025, Malawi’s political landscape is taking shape, with each candidate laying out their vision for the future.
Atupele Muluzi’s timely submission signals that the UDF is prepared to engage in issue-based campaigns and compete on a national platform.
As the race intensifies, all eyes will be on how Muluzi positions himself against his opponents in what is expected to be a tightly contested election.
