Mutharika congratulates new speaker, deputies

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has congratulated Sameer Suleman, Victor Musowa and Esther Jolobala on their election as Speaker, First Deputy Speaker and Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, respectively.

In a statement, the president expressed his confidence in the trio’s leadership qualities and capabilities, which they have consistently demonstrated in various roles.

“I nominated these honourable members for these positions with full confidence in their abilities. I see a capable team that will steer deliberations in the house for the betterment of our mother Malawi,” said Mutharika.

The president assured the new leaders of his full support

He said: “To you Honourable Speakers, this is your moment to serve and shine. Be assured of my full support as you assume office as heads of the legislative arm of government.”

The president concluded by wishing the trio congratulations and best wishes in their new roles, expressing his optimism that they will work tirelessly for the development of Malawi.

Suleman, a member of parliament (MP) for Chigumula, BCA—Club Banana Constituency got 134 votes defeating Malawi Congress Party (MCP’s) Peter Dimba of Lilongwe Phirilanjuzi who amassed 85 votes while other contenders Lasken Vinyo Vigaro and Sandram Scott got no vote.

On the position of First Deputy Speaker, Musowa of Mulanje Bale Constituency emerged victorious with 134 votes defeating the other two contenders, MCP’s Emmanuel Chambulanyina Jere (Mzimba South Constituency) who got 60 votes and UTM’s Catherine Mzumara (Mzimba North Constituency) who got 24 votes.

Jolobala of Machinga East Constituency went unopposed following the withdrawal of two candidates, Abigail Sharif Bongwe of Zomba Likangala Constituency and Owen Malijani from Mchinji South Constituency.
