Three youth members of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) were reportedly held hostage by local businessmen, known as amwenyes, after allegedly defrauding them of millions of kwacha in exchange for promised government contracts.
The youths failed to deliver on these promises, prompting the amwenyes to demand a refund. Their inability to repay the money led to their detention until intervention could be secured.
A minister closely connected to the trio stepped in to negotiate their release. Following the incident, the amwenyes reported the matter to the police, who have since launched an investigation into the alleged fraud.
