Leader of the Atupele Muluzi has challenged Malawi’s former president Peter Mutharika to move beyond rhetoric and introduce concrete measures to tackle corruption, warning that the vice continues to erode the country’s development.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Muluzi—who heads the United Democratic Front—said Malawians are growing weary of repeated promises without decisive action against corruption.

Muluzi stressed that the fight against corruption requires strengthening and empowering institutions mandated to investigate and prosecute graft, noting that many corrupt practices are now carried out through sophisticated and well-organised schemes.

He argued that merely speaking against corruption is no longer sufficient, urging authorities to demonstrate real commitment through effective policies, stronger oversight, and firm enforcement of the law.

According to Muluzi, Malawians deserve practical solutions rather than political statements, particularly at a time when corruption scandals continue to dominate public discourse and threaten national progress.

His remarks come amid growing scrutiny over the controversial purchase of the Amaryllis Hotel by the Public Pensions Fund, a transaction currently under investigation by Parliament.

Recently, Mutharika assured the nation that he is closely monitoring the developments surrounding the deal and the parliamentary inquiry into how the pension fund handled the acquisition.

However, critics argue that the situation underscores the urgent need for stronger accountability mechanisms to protect public resources and restore trust in governance.
