Newly elected Members of Parliament have been officially sworn in at the Parliament of Malawi following their victory in the March 17 by-elections, marking the start of their legislative responsibilities.

The swearing-in ceremony, held in Lilongwe, was presided over by Lovemore Chikopa, who administered the oath of office to the incoming legislators.

The new MPs are Matthews Chinombo Mtumbuka for Rumphi Central Constituency, Thokozire Lunji for Nkhotakota Liwaladzi Constituency, Patrick Siyabonga Bandawe for Dedza Mtakataka Constituency, and Mavuto Mapongo Gulo for Blantyre West Constituency.

The by-elections were conducted to fill vacant parliamentary seats that arose after the September 16 elections, restoring representation to the affected constituencies.

In his remarks, Chikopa congratulated the new lawmakers and urged them to serve with integrity, emphasizing the importance of their role in advancing national development and representing the interests of their constituents.

The swearing-in signals a renewed legislative presence for the constituencies and is expected to contribute to the effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings going forward.
