Economist and politician has attributed Malawi’s ongoing fuel shortages to the depreciation of the local currency, arguing that the root cause lies with policies implemented by the (MCP), not the opposition (DPP).

Kabambe calls for independent enquiry into Chilima’s death

Speaking amid growing public frustration over persistent fuel queues across the country, Kabambe emphasized that the weakening of the kwacha has made it increasingly difficult for Malawi to import fuel. He argued that foreign exchange shortages—driven by currency instability—have disrupted supply chains and worsened the situation.

According to Kabambe, blaming the DPP for the crisis ignores deeper economic realities. He maintained that the current administration’s handling of the economy has significantly contributed to the kwacha’s decline, which in turn has strained the country’s ability to pay for essential imports like fuel.

“The issue is not about politics, but economics,” Kabambe suggested, pointing to the direct link between exchange rates and import capacity. As Malawi relies heavily on imported fuel, any sharp depreciation of the local currency immediately translates into supply challenges.

However, critics of Kabambe’s position argue that structural issues in Malawi’s economy predate the current government, and that both past and present administrations share responsibility for the ongoing crisis. Some analysts also point to global fuel price volatility and regional supply disruptions as contributing factors.
