Malawi is facing a looming public health crisis as a growing shortage of condoms—combined with fears of rising global prices—raises alarm over a potential spike in Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), including HIV, and unintended pregnancies.

Health experts warn that the country’s fragile gains in HIV prevention and reproductive health are now under serious threat.

Ngoma linked the shortage to global supply disruptions, reduced donor funding, and logistical delays affecting international shipments. Key partners such as have scaled back support, while conflicts in manufacturing regions have further strained availability.

The warnings come as Malawi is already experiencing a troubling rise in STI cases. Health data shows infections climbed to over 546,000 in 2024, up from around 501,000 in 2023—highlighting a worsening trend even before the current shortage deepens.

Adolescents and young people remain among the most affected, largely due to limited access to protection and inconsistent condom use.

Experts fear that without urgent intervention—ranging from restoring supply chains to increasing funding and awareness campaigns—the country could face a full-scale reversal of progress made in the fight against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
