The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has announced a major reduction in petrol prices, bringing fresh hope to struggling Malawians battling the rising cost of living and transport expenses.

According to a statement released today, MERA has reduced the price of petrol from K6,672 per litre to K6,209 per litre — a significant drop of K463 per litre.
However, the authority has maintained the price of diesel at K6,687 per litre, a development likely to disappoint businesses and transport operators who heavily rely on diesel-powered vehicles and machinery.

The latest fuel adjustment is expected to trigger nationwide reactions, with many Malawians now anticipating reductions in transport fares and commodity prices following the petrol price cut.

Economic analysts say the reduction could temporarily ease pressure on consumers, although concerns remain over the continued high cost of diesel, which plays a critical role in transportation, agriculture, and industrial production.

MERA said the new fuel prices take effect immediately.
