Supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) at the University of Malawi have defended Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito following the tear gas incident that occurred in Lilongwe on Thursday afternoon during demonstrations linked to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The students, operating under the DPP Wing at the university, say Mukhito acted responsibly by emphasizing that all citizens and political groups must respect the country’s laws regardless of political affiliation.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Anastanzia Dino said the actions by MCP supporters failed to follow police procedures and public assembly regulations that are designed to maintain order and protect lives and property

Dino argued that the police have a constitutional responsibility to ensure security during public gatherings and that ignoring established procedures risks creating chaos and instability in the country.

According to the DPP students, Mukhito demonstrated leadership and political maturity by maintaining that no political party should place itself above the law. They further stated that Malawi’s democracy can only function properly if all groups comply with legal requirements governing demonstrations, processions, and political events.

The remarks come amid growing political tension following clashes and confrontations surrounding attempts by some MCP supporters to hold activities in Lilongwe, including events connected to the commemoration of former Malawi leader Hastings Kamuzu Banda.

Police used tear gas to disperse some MCP followers after disorder erupted during the gathering, a development that has sparked mixed reactions across the political divide. While MCP supporters condemned the police action, DPP supporters and other observers argue that law enforcement officers were carrying out their duty to preserve public order.

The DPP students warned political parties against using emotions and political pressure to undermine security institutions, saying the country’s laws must apply equally to everyone.

They also called on young people in Malawi to promote peace, discipline, and respect for institutions rather than encouraging confrontation and disorder in the streets.

Political analysts say the incident reflects the rising political temperatures in Malawi ahead of major political activities, with both governing and opposition parties increasingly engaging in public battles over issues of democracy, state authority, and political freedoms.
