Major Infrastructure Investment Aims to Improve Transport and Boost Economic Growth

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Roads Authority, Joel Lungwe, disclosed the development while providing an update on the country’s largest ongoing road infrastructure project. The initiative seeks to transform the M1 Highway, Malawi’s primary transport corridor, into a safer and more efficient route for motorists and businesses.

According to Lungwe, contracts valued at MK17 billion have already been awarded to Masters Construction and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Dedza–Ntcheu section. The government has further committed substantial resources toward the project, allocating MK40 billion for the construction of the M1 section from Bunda Turn-off in Lilongwe to Nsipe in Ntcheu. An additional MK40 billion has been earmarked for the Chingeni-to-Kameza section in Blantyre.

The planned Kameza interchange is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in Blantyre, one of Malawi’s busiest commercial hubs. Once completed, the interchange will reduce congestion, enhance road safety, and provide a modern transport network capable of handling increasing traffic volumes.

The announcement follows recent remarks by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, who described the current state of the M1 road between Lilongwe and Blantyre as being in a “very poor condition.” The President noted that the deteriorating road infrastructure has forced travellers to spend excessive hours on the country’s most important highway.If It Is Not DPP In 2025, Then Which Party Is The Best Altenative?

Transport and economic experts believe that upgrading the M1 corridor will have far-reaching benefits for Malawi’s economy. The road serves as a critical link for the movement of goods and people between the country’s political capital, Lilongwe, and commercial capital, Blantyre.

The expansion project is expected to reduce travel times, lower vehicle operating costs, improve road safety, and stimulate economic activity in communities situated along the corridor.
