Speaking during Tembo’s swearing-in ceremony at Kamuzu Palace, Mutharika described the mining sector as one of the biggest opportunities to transform Malawi’s economy, but stressed that its wealth must translate into real benefits for ordinary citizens.

The President acknowledged that foreign and local investors are in business to make profits, but insisted that Malawi should receive a fair share from the exploitation of its mineral resources.

“We welcome investors because they bring capital and expertise, but they must not prosper while Malawi remains poor,” Mutharika said.

“That is the mandate I am giving you. Make sure you stick to that mandate; otherwise, that black car with a flag will be taken away from you,” he cautioned, drawing attention to the high level of accountability expected from the new minister.

Mutharika further declared that his administration would act decisively against anyone found enriching themselves through Malawi’s natural resources at the expense of the nation.
