LILONGWE, Malawi – United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi has dismissed allegations that he is financially supporting Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa, describing the claims as false and intended to intimidate him into silence.

According to Muluzi, some people have been calling him to question why he has publicly commented on Namiwa’s arrest, while others have gone further by alleging that he bankrolls the civil society leader so that he can criticize the government.

The former cabinet minister strongly denied the accusations.

“These allegations are false. Their purpose is to weaken and intimidate me so that I stop speaking on issues of governance, the rule of law and the protection of human rights,” Muluzi said.

He maintained that his position on governance and democratic principles has remained consistent over the years and is not influenced by which political party is in government.

Muluzi stressed that democracy guarantees every citizen the freedom to express opinions without fear of intimidation, misinformation or attempts to silence dissenting voices.

He said defending constitutional freedoms and the rule of law should not be viewed as supporting any particular individual or political group.

The UDF leader further pledged to continue speaking out whenever he believes the principles of good governance, justice and democracy are under threat, regardless of the government in power.

His comments come as the arrest of Sylvester Namiwa has generated widespread public discussion, with political leaders, civil society organisations and members of the public expressing differing views on the matter.
