The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi has expressed sadness following the death of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Director General Brian Banda.

Banda, 45, died on Saturday at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre.

In a statement signed by MISA Malawi Chairperson Felix Washon, the media organisation described Banda as a fearless journalist who had a unique ability to engage both interviewees and audiences.Analysis: Attacks on Journalists Cathy Maulidi and Brian Banda

MISA Malawi said Banda made a significant contribution to journalism and broadcasting in Malawi, earning recognition for his work as a presenter and media personality.

“For a number of years, Brian Banda won Talk Show Host of the Year Awards under the MISA Malawi Annual Media Awards and Television Personality of the Year under MBC Entertainers of the Year Awards,” said Washon.

The organisation said Banda’s death was a loss not only to MBC but also to the wider media fraternity, where he had built a reputation through his journalism and broadcasting career.

Banda had previously worked with The Times Group and Capital Radio before taking up the leadership of MBC as Director General.

His death has left colleagues and members of the media fraternity mourning the loss of one of Malawi’s prominent broadcasters and journalists.
