The Malawi Scorchers WAFCON 2026 campaign has developed into one of the most remarkable stories in African women’s football. What began as Malawi’s first appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has turned into a historic run to the final, while also securing the country’s first-ever qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Scorchers entered the tournament in Morocco as debutants and were placed in a demanding Group C alongside defending champions Nigeria, Zambia and Egypt. Few expected Malawi to survive such a group, let alone progress to the knockout stages and challenge for the continental title. Yet the team has repeatedly defied expectations.

Malawi Scorchers Shock Nigeria

The tournament could hardly have started better.

Malawi stunned defending champions Nigeria 3-2 in Rabat in their opening Group C match. Temwa Chawinga scored twice, while captain Tabitha Chawinga added another goal to give the Scorchers one of the biggest upsets of the competition.

Nigeria, who had won a record 10 WAFCON titles, were expected to dominate the newcomers. Instead, Malawi displayed defensive discipline, pace on the counterattack and remarkable composure in front of goal.

The victory immediately changed the perception of the Scorchers. They were no longer simply tournament debutants—they had become genuine contenders.

Another Statement Against Egypt

Malawi followed the historic victory over Nigeria with another impressive performance against Egypt.

The Scorchers defeated Egypt 3-1 on August 1, with Rose Kadzere, Faith Chinzimu and Temwa Chawinga finding the net. The result moved Malawi to six points after two matches and put them in a commanding position to qualify for the knockout stages.

Even more impressive was the manner in which Malawi handled adversity. Rose Alufandika was sent off early in the second half, leaving the Scorchers to play with 10 players. Rather than collapse, Malawi remained organised and protected their advantage.

Zambia Defeat Does Not Stop Malawi

The final group match brought Malawi back down to earth.

The Scorchers lost 2-1 to Zambia, with Temwa Chawinga scoring Malawi’s goal after Zambia had taken a two-goal lead. Despite the defeat, Malawi advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing level on points with Nigeria and Zambia.

CAF’s head-to-head tiebreak rules ultimately worked in Malawi’s favour. All three teams finished with six points, but Malawi topped the mini-table after scoring more goals in their matches against the other tied teams.

Scorchers Overcome Ghana

Ghana took an early lead, but Malawi refused to panic. Temwa Chawinga restored parity before Rose Kadzere scored the decisive goal as the Scorchers completed a 2-1 comeback victory.

The win secured Malawi a place in the semi-finals and, more importantly, guaranteed the country’s first-ever qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The four WAFCON semi-finalists automatically earned World Cup qualification.

For Malawi, it was a landmark achievement that extended beyond the WAFCON itself.

Chawinga Sisters Fire Malawi Into Final

The biggest chapter of the Malawi Scorchers WAFCON 2026 story came in the semi-final against Algeria.

Malawi defeated Algeria 3-1 in Rabat to reach their first-ever WAFCON final. Tabitha Chawinga scored twice, while Temwa Chawinga added another as the sisters once again became the central figures in Malawi’s historic campaign.

Algeria’s Morgane Belkhiter was sent off in the 23rd minute, giving Malawi a numerical advantage. Tabitha opened the scoring before Temwa doubled the lead shortly before half-time.

Algeria fought back after the break through Ikram Adjabi, but Tabitha struck again in the 77th minute to settle the contest.

Goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo also played a crucial role, making important saves as Algeria pushed for a comeback.

A New Era for Malawi Women’s Football

The Scorchers’ WAFCON journey has already rewritten Malawi’s football history.

Before this tournament, Malawi had never appeared at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and had never qualified for a FIFA Women’s World Cup. Now, the team has achieved both milestones in the same campaign.

The success also highlights the importance of the Chawinga sisters, the tactical work of coach Lovemore Fazili, the contribution of local players and the growing investment in Malawi women’s football.

The Scorchers will now face Cameroon in the 2026 WAFCON final on August 16, with a chance to complete one of the most extraordinary debut campaigns in African football.

Whatever happens in the final, the Malawi Scorchers WAFCON 2026 campaign has already secured a permanent place in the country’s sporting history.

From defeating the African champions to surviving a difficult group, overcoming Ghana and beating Algeria, Malawi have shown that their success is no accident.

The Scorchers went to Morocco hoping to make history.

They have already done so—and now they stand one match away from becoming African champions.
