Former President and MCP leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is continuing receiving endorsement after endorsement from MCP Members of Parliament and party leaders for the 2030 presidential election.
The MCP Constitution has no clause for Life President after Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda and it will not be as a surprise that some party leaders will make Chakwera the Life President of the mighty MCP.
Dr. Lazarus Chakwera stood in the 2014 and 2019 presidential elections and this, according to the MCP Constitution, he was supposed to leave office for other potential senior members of the party to take over.
In June, 2020 Dr. Lazarus Chakwera stood for the court – sanctioned fresh presidential elections which he won under the MCP – UTM Alliance and as the country was approaching the 16th September, 2025 elections, MCP MPs endorsed Chakwera to stand for the party where he lost miserably.
As Dr. Lazarus Chakwera was coming back from Kasungu to Lilongwe where he attended the CCAP Livingstonia Synod Annual General Assembly, he first stopped at Mtunthama trading centre where Kasungu East MCP District Chairman Mr. Chisomo Mbembeza endorsed Chakwera as the party’s presidential torch – bearer for the 2030 election.
Kasungu East constituency Member of Parliament Alex Nkhoma echoed the same sentiments that the 2030 election demands Chakwera to bounce back into government to address farm – gate prices on the claims that farmers are crying.
In his speech, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera assured the people that he is ready to serve them as their president in 2030 speaking clearly that Chakwera is running the MCP as a briefcase political party not as a national party.
A Malawi Congress Party (MCP) diehard of Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has questioned MCP members and supporters that are there no potential candidates in the MCP to take over from Dr. Lazarus Chakwera?
Kamphangala said Dr. Lazarus Chakwera is being deceived by hundreds of people lining in the streets demanding him to address them that they are for him.
He has asjed the MCP to tell its members and supporters that there’s no one in the party who can take over the party’s leadership apart from Chakwera arguing that Chakwera cannot accumulate more than 100,000 votes from central region.
“The region is already divided with many don’t want Chakwera, Chimwendo Banda and other senior members of the party, there’s a campaign going around for a vote of no confidence on Chakwera,” said Kamphangala.
He has warned all those that are endorsing Chakwera for the 2030 elections that Chakwera can in no way win any election in Malawi, saying there’s nothing that Chakwera can promise Malawians that he will deliver after failing to deliver the same.
Kamphangala has finally advised patriotic members and supporters of the MCP not to tolerate nonsense, Chakwera must be forced to step down as MCP President in as soon as yesterday for others to lead the party to the 2030 presidential election.
