Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba has challenged parastatals in the communications sector to improve performance, embrace innovation and take greater responsibility for delivering measurable results to Malawians.
Namalomba warned that institutions that fail to meet agreed targets will face corrective action, stressing that heads of parastatals must take personal responsibility for monitoring performance, addressing weaknesses and ensuring that their institutions deliver on their mandates.
He made the remarks in Blantyre when he opened a meeting between the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology and parastatals operating in the communications sector.
The minister said government could no longer tolerate a culture in which institutions continue doing things simply because they have always been done that way.
“We cannot afford a culture where institutions continue to operate on the basis of routine simply because that is how things have always been done,” Namalomba said.
He called for greater efficiency, innovation, responsiveness and measurable results, warning that poor performance must be addressed rather than allowed to become institutional practice.
“Where performance is below expectation, corrective measures must be taken,” he said.
Deputy Chief Secretary to the Government and Comptroller of Statutory Corporations Stuart Ligomeka urged the parastatals to strengthen cooperation and support one another, saying closer collaboration would contribute to more effective public service delivery.
Meanwhile, Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) board chairperson Chancy Gondwe reminded the institutions that their responsibility extends beyond simply maintaining their existence or implementing individual programmes.
Gondwe said the parastatals have a duty to fully execute the mandates for which they were established and demonstrate tangible value to the people of Malawi.
The meeting brought together key institutions in the communications sector, including MACRA, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), Malawi Posts Corporation and Malawi Digital Broadcasting Network Limited.
The minister’s call comes as government continues to place greater emphasis on performance, accountability and improved service delivery across public institutions.
