Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has appointed Bob Mpinganjira as head coach of the Malawi national Under-23 football team, the Flames U-23, less than 24 hours after his suspension by Mighty Wanderers FC.
The appointment marks a dramatic new chapter for the experienced coach, who now faces the task of guiding Malawi’s emerging football talent on the international stage.
Mpinganjira’s appointment comes shortly after Mighty Wanderers suspended him from his position as head coach following a disappointing run of results, including the team’s defeat to Ekhaya FC in the Airtel Top 8 final.
While his departure from the Nomads has created debate among football supporters, FAM has moved quickly to hand him a new assignment with the national team.
Mpinganjira gets chance to rebuild
The Flames U-23 appointment gives Mpinganjira an opportunity to shift his focus from club football to international competition.
His immediate challenge will be to prepare the Malawi Under-23 side for its upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Malawi are expected to face Eswatini in the first round of the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the first match scheduled for 28 September 2026.
The assignment will require careful preparation as Mpinganjira works with a group of young players hoping to establish themselves as the next generation of Malawi’s senior national team.
Pressure starts immediately
Despite the short turnaround from his club suspension to his national-team appointment, Mpinganjira will have little time to dwell on events at Mighty Wanderers.
