The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to helping Malawi reduce household poverty, pledging millions of euros towards agriculture, education, energy and emergency food assistance over the next five years.

EU Ambassador to Malawi, Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, made the commitment on Tuesday in Mzuzu during an interaction with journalists from the northern region under the Nyika Media Club.

Gaztelumendi said the EU plans to invest €143 million in agro-processing, particularly soya beans and coffee, while €40 million will support the expansion of the Wovwe Hydropower Plant in Karonga District.

He further announced €60 million for the education sector and €17 million to assist 2.6 million Malawians expected to face hunger due to anticipated El Niño-related weather conditions during the 2026/27 rainy season.

The commitments reflect the EU’s continued support for Malawi’s development, with investments targeting economic opportunities, electricity generation, education and food security.
