AIP Drama As Angry People Detain Fertiliser Truck

Some disgruntled people at Kamphata Trading Center in Lilongwe on Thursday detained a truck carrying fertilizer for the Affordable Inputs Programme-AIP.

They argued they are not receiving enough fertilizer in their areas. But this truck was destined for other areas within Traditional Authority Kalumbu in the district.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu has confirmed the development and says they have since arrested six people for allegedly inciting violence.

He says police and other stakeholders intervened to release the truck. But this did not please the people there.

“They mobilized themselves and went to the road. They started blocking the M1 road, burning tyres, pelting stones at passing vehicles, and demanding cash from motorists,” explains Chigalu.

Meanwhile, calm has now returned as police are still monitoring the situation on the ground. The suspects, whose identities are currently not known, “will appear in court to answer a case of inciting violence and other criminal related charges.”
