Chakwera, Hara Sued For Passing And Assenting Corrupt Practices Act Bill

The Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) has sued President Lazarus Chakwera and Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara for deliberation, passing and assenting of the amended Corrupt Practices Act (CPA).

Court documents we have seen indicate that the speaker is being sued for allowing the National Assembly to deliberate on the bill which was inconsistent with Section 99 of the Constitution while the president is being sued for assenting to the Act in question.

Lawyer representing HRCC George Jivason Kadzipatike confirmed filing an application for leave for judicial review before the High Court in Lilongwe.

Kadzipatike further said the matter is coming for judicial hearing on March 17, 2023.

In July last year, Parliament passed the amended Act before Chakwera assented to it in September.
