Chakwera To Step Down As SADC Chairperson

As President Lazarus Chakwera is expected to step down as Chairperson for the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) next week, civil society organisations in the region have faulted his one year administration for poor economic and democratic governance.

Chairperson of the commissions of the CSOs operating under the banner Southern African People’s Solidarity Network (SAPSN), Limbani Nsapato says among other failures, the regional body has blocked engagement space with non state actors over the past year.

He also notes that Sadc has not been able to provide information on its website regarding its interventions on regional economic governance, human rights, debt and aid and civil space.
