Divorce Cases Sour In Mangochi

Authorities in Mangochi are raising concerns over an increase in cases of divorce.

It is reported that not less than 10 couples are filing for divorce every day in the district. Such cases according to Senior Resident Magistrate for Mangochi, Rodrick Michongwe, are resulting in child maintenance applications and where children are not being supported, they are turning to the streets.

“Some women are filing for divorce on grounds that their husbands have stayed in South Africa for a long period without coming back home. Some are contesting issues of polygamy, as you know the practice is common here in Mangochi,” said Senior Resident Magistrate Michongwe.

He was speaking during a court users committee meeting where stakeholders met to share experiences and updates in areas of improving access to justice at the district level.
