Football Teams express concern over poor state of Mzuzu Stadium

By Suleman Chitera May15,2023

It has now become a norm for football teams which play at Mzuzu Stadium which is Moyale Barracks FC home ground to complain bitterly about its poor state which they allege impact negatively on their game plans.

Last week, Silver Strikers Head Coach, Pieter De Jongh expressed concern over the pitch’s condition at the stadium saying it is a shame that professional football in Malawi is being played on a pitch where even his 4- year -old dog would refuse to play.

These comments drew criticism from some corners but he appears to be vindicated now following recent comments made by both Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Moyale Barracks FC.

Speaking in an interview after playing out a goalless draw on Saturday, Wanderers player Alfred Manyozo described the pitch as one of the bumpiest playing grounds in the country adding that it is almost unplayable.

In a separate interview, Coach for Moyale Barracks, Nicholas Mhango said it is impossible to play a touch and go game at the stadium because the surface is very bumpy and rough.

Earlier, before the 2023/24 Super League season kicked off, Board Chairperson for the Malawi National Council of Sports, Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise, also bemoaned the poor state of the Stadium at the end of Mzuzu City Half Marathon.

Spokesperson for Mzuzu City Council, MacDonald Gondwe pledged that the council will act on the issue as highlighted by stakeholders to ensure the stadium meets desirable standards.
