Former Deputy Minister of Health Halima Daudi is in police custody at Lilongwe Police Station after she was allegedly found in possession of US$76,900 suspected to be counterfeit.

National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo confirmed the arrest, saying Daudi is expected to appear in court soon.

“It is true. She was found with $76,900 suspected to be counterfeit currency. She is expected to appear before the court soon,” said Chimtembo.

According to police, Daudi will be charged with being found in possession of articles bearing designs that imitate currency — an offence under Malawi’s penal laws relating to counterfeit money.

Authorities have not yet disclosed how the suspected fake dollars were discovered, whether the money was tested and confirmed counterfeit, or if other individuals are being pursued in connection with the case.

Daudi, a member of the Malawi Congress Party, has previously served as deputy minister in several government portfolios. She was first elected Member of Parliament for Dowa South East in 2009, lost the seat in 2014, and regained it in 2019.

More details are expected as the case proceeds to court.
