Government calls for promotion of peace and unity

Lilongwe, October 12: Minister of National Unity, Timothy Mtambo has called upon Malawians to embrace peace and unity among themselves.

Speaking at a National Day of Unity and Dialogue (NDUD) and 2022 International Day of Peace Conference at Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) in Lilongwe,
the Minister said the ultimate responsibility for peace rest on the shoulders of the people of Malawi and that his Ministry will remain a steadfast partner and supporter of their efforts to achieve enduring peace in the country.

Mtambo further said, his Ministry has established a National Day of Unity and Dialogue to promote sustainable peace and unity for national development and that the key role of this day is to enhance national unity, patriotism and to facilitate the building of social cohesion and sustainable peace through promotion of unity in diversity.

In her statement, Principal Secretary for Ministry of National Unity Dr. Elizabeth Gomani Chindebvu, emphasized that government is committed to promotion of peace and unity among Malawians.

“Time has come to eliminate all forms of disagreements among people and promote coexistence,” Chindebvu said.

The two day conference has brought together experts, policy makers, diplomats, traditional leaders, academicians and civil society representatives to exchange views and reach a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced in the country.

This is the first time to have a celebration of National Day of Unity in Malawi and the actual event is scheduled for Friday 14th October, and President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera is expected to grace the occasion.

This year’s event is themed “Living Together in Unity, Build Peace.”
