Lilongwe, November 2: Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Gospel Kazako has announced that government intends to increase internet access to 80 percent by 2026.
The Minister disclosed this during a press briefing on digitalisation developments in Lilongwe.
Kazako said government has also partnered with Starlink which is a low cost internet broadband to help in provision of fast and cheaper internet service in Malawi.
He also disclosed that government intends to set up diplomatic data corridors with it’s neighbouring countries in a bid to reduce the cost of data and increase internet penetration.
The diplomatic data corridors will enable Malawians to have affordable internet connection.
Director General of Macra, Daud Suleman said as Malawi is becoming a digital active nation there is need of people to start accessing digital gadgets easily.
Among other digitalisation developments announced during the briefing included, the intension of government to build an innovation city in Mvera Dowa, the enforcement of government employees to be using official government e-mails on official communication, and the
setting up of 30 community broadband operators across the country by 2023.
