Mombera University Construction Ready To Start

Stalled construction works on the multi-billion kwacha Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa University in Mzimba may now see the much public awaited progress after many years of dormancy and talking.

The latest move is courtesy of the Ministry of Education which has established a six member Public Universities Working Committee – PUWC to among others, spearhead implementation of the ambitious project.

In a statement issued today, Secretary for Education Chikondano Mussa has told Malawians that the committee will be led by Prof. Zachary Kasomekera.

Other members are Prof. Happy Kayuni, Dr. Fanny Chigwa, Mrs. Masuzgo Hara, Dr. McPherson Jere and Dr. Richard Dilawo.

Mussa says the committee, which is effective 29th July 2022, will be working under the Malawi Universities Development Programme – MUDED, that looks into the development of all new university projects in Malawi.

Former President Prof. Peter Mutharika unveiled a plaque for the then Mbombera University project, in 2015 but up to date there is nothing to show on the ground.

Local organisations such as the Great North Transformation Initiative – GNTI have been demanding explanations on the project dormancy which water down the pomp.

GNTI Operations Manager Henry Kajilange once told Rainbow Online that the project delay is denying prospective students from within and abroad a chance to access university education.

Once the Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’mbelwa University comes to fruition, it will be the second public university in the north after the Mzuzu University, formerly the Mzuzu Teachers’ Training College.
